Absolute return (also called point-to-point return or simple return) measures the total percentage gain or loss on an investment from the date of purchase to today. It is the simplest return metric — calculated as (Current Value - Invested Amount) / Invested Amount × 100. Unlike CAGR or XIRR, absolute return does not account for the time taken to achieve that return. A 50% absolute return in 2 years is excellent, but the same 50% over 20 years is poor. For this reason, absolute return should always be read alongside CAGR or XIRR for a complete picture.
Enter the total amount you originally invested (purchase price or cost basis).
Enter the current value of the investment (today's market value or NAV-based value).
The calculator shows absolute return %, total gain or loss in ₹, and a visual breakdown.
Absolute Return = (Current Value - Invested Amount) / Invested Amount × 100 Example: Invested: ₹1,00,000 | Current Value: ₹1,45,000 Absolute Return = (1,45,000 - 1,00,000) / 1,00,000 × 100 = 45%
Investment: ₹1,00,000 → Current: ₹1,45,000 Absolute Return: 45% Gain: ₹45,000 Context: Is 45% good? - If held for 1 year → Excellent (45% CAGR) - If held for 5 years → Moderate (~7.7% CAGR) - If held for 10 years → Poor (~3.8% CAGR, below inflation)
